Back when I was growing up, I started getting highlights in the sixth grade. Actually, my memory brings me back even further to my single-digit youth. My mom basically dumped an entire bottle of “Sun-In” on my head every summer, in hopes to give me a more effortless natural blonde look. Y’all remember blonde hair (no matter how you achieved it) was the style back in the 90s, think 1999 Slim Shady glory days. We can all relate to these throwback memories, even if some are a bit cringeworthy. Looking back, I laugh at these memories but extra thankful for the hair lows to now the hair glow up.
Right: In sixth grade, after my first professional highlight appointment. My sister looking flawless per usual!
As I mentioned above, I started getting my hair highlighted at a very young age. I loved dipping my toe (guess I should say hair) into the beauty world at the all knowing age of 12. As I progressed through my teenage years, I had my fair share of hair abuse from bleaching, frying, and overall neglect to my locks. The lack of proper hair care took a toll on the quality & length of my hair, which created split end and dehydration central!
Back then, I did not have the hair care knowledge or maintenance tools that I now incorporate in my weekly hair routine. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite products and tips that truly saved my hair quality and created a healthy, long length for my desired “Rapunzel Elsa Princess Bride” styled hair on my wedding day.

1 // Quench your hair with a heat protectant!
The moment I started using heat protectant, I saw an instance difference in the strength of my hair. This is a simple way to provide a shield of protection while styling your hair with any hot tool: blow dryer, curling iron, flat iron, wand, you name it! Think about it… these tools get to 300-400 degrees Fahrenheit. I legit just burned the sh*t out of my finger from my wand, so I can only imagine what that heat is doing to my hair?!
Product: My hands down favorite heat protectant is Kerastase Fluidissime Anti Frizz Spray. I get about four months of use out of each bottle.
Directions: On towel dried hair, liberally spray all over your hair, paying more attention to the ends. I use about 8-10 sprays on my hair, however the amount of product will vary per length. I say it is totally worth the investment to strengthen and protect those locks!
2 // Lather on that protective serum!
Look at the ends of your hair right now? Are they split? Are they frayed? Don’t fret- there are easy ways to bring them back to life! This serum is a close second to my #1 recommendation, in fact I would say they are tied for first. It is seals in hydration and repairs damaged ends as a result of color, heat, and over-processed hair.
Product: The Kerastase Sérum Thérapiste Hair Serum is an absolute game changer and gives my hair strength to grow toward a healthy, long length past my shoulders.
Directions: Apply this serum on only the ends of your hair. Pay special attention to the ends in the front section, as this tends to be the area that gets the most damage.
3 // Scale back the amount of hair wash days per week.
I used to be a victim of this time sucking, hair killing habit and I swear washing your hair daily dries it out even more! If you’re new to this time saving tip, try to go at least 1-2 days without washing your hair and you will notice a new softness and strength in your hair quality. As your hair adapts to your new routine, you should be able to go 3-4 days without a wash. I have friends who can go 7+ days, and they are straight up #goals!
Product: To extend the amount of time without a wash, I use Drybar Dry Shampoo.
Directions: My preferred method is to use on night 2 or 3, right before bed. I flip my hair into different parts and spray along my scalp. The dry shampoo soaks into your roots overnight. This makes for a super easy hair touch up in the AM, by simply massaging in the spray into your roots and styling as normal.
4 // My secret weapon for length is a collagen supplement.
I incorporate a collagen powder into my everyday diet because I could not find a protein powder that would agree with my lactose intolerance. To my surprise, this powder had incredible benefits to not only my protein intake, but also sparked my hair and nails into instant growth, while giving my skin a healthy glow.
Product: Here I present to you, Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides.
My favorite way to add the peptides is into a dairy free yogurt with granola and fruit. You can also add into your morning coffee or even a shaker bottle of water for an on the go dose!
